Zündapp was an important German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by simply Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG along with the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is actually German for Igniter as well as Apparatus). The 1st Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of large motorcycles began in 1933 while using the K-series. The "K" refers to the type of drivetrain that these models used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft using two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to 900 cc displacement and was an important success, increasing Zündapp's market write about in Germany from 5% throughout 1931 to 18% within 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 horsepower (21 kW) flat opposed twin cylinder electric motor with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production in the late 1940s, it chose to reuse the KS600's motor to be able to power the KS601 along with few modifications.The Zündapp K800 had unit construction, flat-four engines with base drive (a layout adopted by Honda to the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the only real 4-cylinder machines used with the German armed forces throughout WWII.

Coming from 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Automobile für Jedermann ("car intended for everyone"), which was the first time the name Volkswagen had been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder level engine, but Zündapp used some sort of water-cooled 5-cylinder radial engine. In 1932 three prototypes ended up running. All three cars were lost through the war, the last in any 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid.From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp produced the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp which has a foot gear change, and 170 examples had been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced in excess of 18, 000 units of the particular Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit which has a driven side wheel as well as a locking differential, supplied to the German Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines including the 9-092, which was used within light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) belly initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII this company transitioned to smaller products, notably the "Bella" electric motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine because of its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. From 1957 to 1958 the business also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the company moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed numerous new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some accomplishment in motorsports with participant André Malherbe winning the actual 125cc European motocross championships in 1973 and all over again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds offered well, but later sales dropped and in 1984 the business went bankrupt and finished.

After the bankruptcy, the entire production range and intellectual properties had been bought by Xunda Motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still in business, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and electrical mopeds.Zündapp also had a new technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to build mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory has been built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to make small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (based on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and also a sleeveless hard chromed storage container barrel, all were a first over a motorcycle in that nation.
