Zündapp was a significant German motorcycle manufacturer started in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG along with the machine tool manufacturer Thiel underneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Grams. m. b. H. " as a producer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau will be German for Igniter as well as Apparatus). The 1st Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle intended for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of weighty motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft together with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed versions from 200 to eight hundred cc displacement and was a significant success, increasing Zündapp's market write about in Germany from 5% within 1931 to 18% inside 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . By 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Automobile für Jedermann ("car with regard to everyone"), which was the very first time the name Volkswagen had been used. After WWII the company transitioned to smaller products, notably the "Bella" motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine to its type. In 1951 Zündapp released a final of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (this "green elephant") with a 598 cc two-cylinder engine. From 1957 to 1958 the business also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the firm moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed numerous new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievements in motorsports with participant André Malherbe winning the 125cc European motocross championships in 1973 and again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds sold well, but later sales diminished and in 1984 the business went bankrupt and shut.

Following the bankruptcy, the entire production range and intellectual properties ended up being bought by Xunda Motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorbikes from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still in business, but makes Honda based 4-stroke motorcycles and electrical mopeds.Zündapp also had a new technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory seemed to be built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to produce small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Round. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus and also the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced to be a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake plus a sleeveless hard chromed cylinder barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that region.
