Zündapp was a significant German motorcycle manufacturer started in 1917 in Nuremberg simply by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG along with the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. H. " as a manufacturer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau can be German for Igniter in addition to Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined following WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor on the company, and two years later he diversified in the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the actual microcar, moped and Scooter (street motorcycle) markets. The company collapsed within 1984.Zuendap. biz markets markets pedal bike and electric bicycles when using the Zundapp name and company logo. while Zuendapp.com markets "enduro-sport" motorcycles under the Zundapp brand.

The primary Zündapp motorcycle was the particular model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of large motorcycles began in 1933 using the K-series. The "K" refers to the type of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft using two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed designs from 200 to 800 cc displacement and was a significant success, increasing Zündapp's market talk about in Germany from 5% inside 1931 to 18% throughout 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . (21 kW) width wise opposed twin cylinder electric motor with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often as well as a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Footwear no. 1) sidecar entire body was produced between 1938 along with 1941 and supplied exclusively to the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and in the end replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to become the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction of war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production from the late 1940s, it chose to recycle the KS600's motor to help power the KS601 along with few modifications. The Zündapp K800 received unit construction, flat-four engines with the whole length drive (a structure adopted by Honda with the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the sole 4-cylinder machines used with the German armed forces in WWII.

Through 1931 Ferdinand Porsche in addition to Zündapp developed the prototype Automobile für Jedermann ("car with regard to everyone"), which was the first time the name Volkswagen had been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder flat engine, but Zündapp used some sort of water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serps. In 1932 three prototypes were being running. All three cars were lost in the war, the last in some sort of 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp made the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp with a foot gear change, and 170 examples have been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced over 18, 000 units of this Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit having a driven side wheel and a locking differential, supplied to the In german Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like the 9-092, which was used within light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) belly initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the organization transitioned to smaller products, notably the "Bella" electric motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine because of its type. In 1951 Zündapp released one more of its heavy street bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the particular "green elephant") with a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. From 1957 to 1958 the company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar. In 1958 the business moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed several new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some success in motorsports with participant André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross titles in 1973 and yet again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds sold well, but later sales declined and in 1984 the business went bankrupt and shut down.

Following bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties was bought by Xunda Electric motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till early 1990s. Zündapp is still operating, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and energy mopeds.Zündapp also had a technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to make mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory had been built at Ranipet near Chennai from the early 1980s to produce small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (based on Zündapp KS175) was introduced like a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake as well as a sleeveless hard chromed tube barrel, all were a first on a motorcycle in that state.
