Zündapp was an essential German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by simply Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG as well as the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. H. " as a maker of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau can be German for Igniter and Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand with regard to weapons parts declined following WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor with the company, and two years later he diversified to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into this microcar, moped and Scooter (bike) markets. The company collapsed with 1984.Zuendap. biz markets markets bi-cycle and electric bicycles while using the Zundapp name and logo. while Zuendapp.com markets "enduro-sport" motorcycles under the Zundapp brand.

The initial Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle intended for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of major motorcycles began in 1933 while using K-series. The "K" refers to the kind of drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft together with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed types from 200 to 400 cc displacement and was an important success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% inside 1931 to 18% throughout 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder engine with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in addition to a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Shoe no. 1) sidecar system was produced between 1938 and also 1941 and supplied exclusively towards the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and finally replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was for being the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction of war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production from the late 1940s, it chose to recycle the KS600's motor to power the KS601 along with few modifications. The Zündapp K800 experienced unit construction, flat-four engines with shaft drive (a layout adopted by Honda for that Gold Wing in 1974) and were the sole 4-cylinder machines used by the German armed forces in WWII.

From 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Car für Jedermann ("car regarding everyone"), which was the first-time the name Volkswagen ended up being used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder smooth engine, but Zündapp used a water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serps. In 1932 three prototypes had been running. All three cars were lost over the war, the last in some sort of 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp made the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp having a foot gear change, and 170 examples were built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced in excess of 18, 000 units of your Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit that has a driven side wheel plus a locking differential, supplied to the German born Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines such as the 9-092, which was used in light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) stomach initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the business transitioned to smaller equipment, notably the "Bella" electric motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (the "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. From 1957 to 1958 the company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar. In 1958 the corporation moved from Nuremberg in order to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed several new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievement in motorsports with riders André Malherbe winning the 125cc European motocross championships in 1973 and all over again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds sold well, but later sales decreased and in 1984 this company went bankrupt and closed.

Following the bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till the first 1990s. Zündapp is still operating, but makes Honda primarily based 4-stroke motorcycles and electrical mopeds.Zündapp also had any technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory had been built at Ranipet near Chennai from the early 1980s to make small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus as well as the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (dependant on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake along with a sleeveless hard chromed cylinder barrel, all were a first on a motorcycle in that country.
